State Coordinators’ Advocacy Conference
The first annual State Coordinators’ Advocacy Conference was held June 27-29, 2011 in Washington DC. Attendees participated in a lively discussion on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) reauthorization with Massie Ritsch, Deputy Assistant Secretary for External Affairs and Outreach at the U.S. Department of Education. They also attended a session on the federal budget and appropriations with the Committee for Education Funding Executive Director Joel Packer and heard presentations from the following NASSP coalition partners: Alliance for Excellent Education (middle level and high school reform), Washington Partners (literacy), and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (teacher and principal issues).

NASSP State Coordinators Chris Johnston (Central Davidson Middle School) and Glenn Reaves (Beddingfield High School) attended the conference representing North Carolina. On June 29th, Chris and Glenn joined others on Capitol Hill for individual Senate and Congressional meetings that included the offices of: Senator Richard Burr, Senator Kay Hagan, Congressman Howard Coble, Congressman Heath Shuler, Congresswoman Virginia Foxx and Congresswoman Renee Ellmers. Several legislative items were discussed with a focus on the reauthorization of the ESEA with modifications which include changes in how AYP is calculated for schools and the elimination of the Four Turn Around Models.
