Secretary
Duncan Addresses 450 Principals
Secretary of Education
Arne Duncan addressed the NAESP-NASSP National
Leaders’ Conference (NLC), stating that
school reform cannot happen without strong principals.
In his remarks, Secretary Duncan highlighted
President Obama’s priorities for education,
including expanding the access and quality of
early childhood education opportunities, improving
state standards and data systems, identifying
and rewarding quality teachers and principals,
and turning around the lowest performing schools.
His presentation included a
question and answer session, during which he
invited principals to ask questions about their
biggest concerns, further underscoring his commitment
to listening to practicing educators about the
most vital issues facing schools. In response
to a question about the need for embedded, quality
professional development for principals, Duncan
indicated that training is only part of the
solution. He stressed the need for a “pipeline”
of quality principals at all levels of education
and indicated President Obama’s interest
in putting good principals in the nation’s
neediest schools to ensure success.
